Below Knee

Below Knee

A below knee prosthesis is an artificial limb designed to replace a leg amputated below the knee. These prosthetics are crucial in restoring mobility, allowing individuals to walk, run, and engage in daily activities. They are tailored to each user, ensuring a perfect fit and maximum comfort.

Types of Below Knee Prosthetics

  1. Preparatory Prosthesis:
    • This is the initial prosthesis given to a patient post-amputation. It helps reduce swelling and allows for alignment adjustments as the residual limb heals and changes shape. Typically made from plaster-of-Paris or plastic, it includes a pylon (aluminum tube) connected to an artificial foot and is secured with a belt around the waist or shoulder.
  2. Patella-Tendon Weight-Bearing Prosthesis (PTB):
    • Suitable for 90% of below knee amputees, the PTB prosthesis distributes weight through the patella tendon, tibial condyles, and the residual limb. It provides a snug fit, ensuring stability and reducing skin irritation.
  3. Total-Surface Bearing Prosthesis (TSB):
    • The TSB prosthesis offers total contact with the residual limb, allowing weight distribution across the entire surface. This enhances stability and a sense of attachment, making it a preferred choice for many users.
  4. Joint-Corset Prosthesis:
    • Ideal for those requiring additional support, this prosthesis allows users to apply greater force than their body weight through the thigh bone. It's particularly beneficial for activities like kneeling, climbing ladders, or stairs, providing enhanced stability and functionality.

The Prosthetic Fitting Process

After an amputation, patients go through several stages of rehabilitation, including pre-prosthetic training to strengthen muscles and prepare the residual limb. The fitting process involves:

  • Initial Evaluation: Assessing the patient’s medical history, functional level, and potential for progress.
  • Residual Limb Preparation: Shaping and shrinking the residual limb using ace wraps or elastic shrinkers.
  • Custom Fitting: Measuring and creating a prosthetic socket that fits the residual limb perfectly.

Benefits of Below Knee Prosthetics

  • Improved Mobility: Enables walking, running, and other physical activities.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Restores independence and confidence.
  • Customizable Fit: Tailored to individual needs for maximum comfort.

Below knee prosthetics are transformative devices that significantly improve the lives of amputees. With advancements in technology, these prosthetics are becoming more comfortable, durable, and functional, enabling users to lead active and fulfilling lives.
